Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of social media on football clubs and players. The study was conducted using the document analysis technique, one of the qualitative research methods. International sports economy reports such as UEFA, Deloitte, and KPMG, as well as academic studies in the fields of social media interaction, digital brand management, and sports communication, were systematically reviewed. The data obtained were classified using thematic analysis methods, and the effects of social media on football clubs and players were evaluated within a holistic framework. The study found that social media has become a strategic tool for football clubs, both strengthening corporate communication and creating economic value. It was determined that digital engagement indicators increase the brand value of clubs, contribute to the expansion of global fan communities, and lead to a 12–20% increase in sponsorship revenues. For players, social media was found to play a central role in personal brand building; the visibility of posts, follower volume, and interaction levels were found to have a direct impact on sponsorship revenues. However, it was also determined that the high visibility offered by the digital environment brings with it risk areas such as cyberbullying, increased negative perception during crises, misinformation, and psychological pressure. Social media has gained importance as a strategic tool that creates competitive strength and brand value for football clubs, while supporting visibility and career management for players. In this regard, social media is considered an effective element in modern football at both the corporate and individual levels.
